🇨🇾 After Election Defeat, Ersin Tatar Blames “Greek Cypriot Attacks,” While Erdoğan Congratulates the New Leader
The first round of the “elections” in the occupied areas concluded with Tufan Erhürman securing a decisive victory over Ersin Tatar, becoming the new Turkish Cypriot leader. Following the announcement of results, Tatar appeared on Kıbrıs TV, saying he “respects the people’s will,” but attributed his loss to “interference by Greek Cypriots and the EU,” as well as internal divisions among political parties.

He emphasized that his five-year tenure was focused on “strengthening ties with Turkey” and regretted that “part of society failed to recognize his efforts.” Tatar also referred to “campaigns against him” regarding border and crossing point issues.

Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides congratulated Erhürman, expressing readiness to resume settlement talks. Meanwhile, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan sent his congratulations, stating that Turkish Cypriots “have democratically expressed their will,” and reaffirmed that Ankara will continue to defend their sovereign rights.

Christodoulides Congratulates New Turkish Cypriot Leader and Expresses Readiness to Resume Cyprus Talks
President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides sent his congratulations to the newly elected Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman, emphasizing respect for the will of the Turkish Cypriot community as expressed in the recent elections. He noted that he looks forward to an early meeting to discuss ways to restart negotiations on the Cyprus issue.

Christodoulides reaffirmed Cyprus’s determination to resume dialogue from the point where it was interrupted in Crans-Montana, in line with the framework set by UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

The President described the upcoming informal UN-led meeting as a “key opportunity” to revive talks. He stressed that any future settlement must be based on UN resolutions, Security Council decisions, and the principles and values of the European Union, of which Cyprus is and will remain a full member.

🚔 Cyprus Strengthens Security: Police Receive First Armored VAMTAC ST5 Vehicle Funded by the EU
The Cyprus Police have unveiled their first VAMTAC ST5 armored vehicle, fully funded by the European Union at a cost of €755,000. Designed for high-risk operations, the vehicle provides protection against G3 rifles and Kalashnikov assault weapons.

Developed by the Spanish company Urovesa over 16 months, the model was custom-built for Cypriot security forces. It can carry up to eight officers and is equipped with the American Patriot MARS system — a retractable ramp extending up to six meters, allowing use in building or aircraft assault missions.

Police officials emphasized that the VAMTAC ST5 is not a patrol vehicle, but one intended for emergency and counterterrorism operations. It reaches speeds of up to 120 km/h, has B6-level ballistic protection, and features advanced cameras and communication systems.

The project is part of the EU’s program to strengthen internal security among member states. Spanish instructors have trained nine Cypriot officers to operate the vehicle, and Urovesa will provide maintenance for the first five years.

The VAMTAC ST5 marks a new milestone in Cyprus’s counterterrorism capabilities and stands as a key component of Europe’s broader security framework.

🦈 Rare Discovery at Cape Greco: Divers Spot a Fangtooth Moray — A Rare Visitor and a Reminder of Cyprus’s Ancient Seas
A rare encounter has sparked excitement among Cyprus’s divers and marine biologists — at Cape Greco, inside the Cyclops Cave, underwater photographer Gareth Griffiths captured a fangtooth moray eel (Enchelycore anatina), known for its razor-sharp teeth and intimidating appearance.
🌊 Ancient Traces in Cypriot Waters
This species is usually found in the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the Eastern Mediterranean, but sightings near Cyprus are extremely rare. The first record dates back to the 1980s, when marine biologists studied how warming waters affected the migration of tropical species. Since then, the fangtooth moray has become a “climate indicator” — the warmer the sea around Cyprus, the more often these tropical visitors appear in coastal caves.
🧿 Myths and Legends of Cape Greco
Local divers link the moray to ancient legends of the Cyclops, a sea giant said to guard the underwater caves of Cape Greco. In old times, residents of Paralimni and Protaras believed that the creature protected mysterious fish with predator-like teeth. Modern scientists joke that such morays may well have inspired those ancient myths.
⚠️ A Predator, But Not a Threat
Despite its fearsome look, the fangtooth moray poses no danger to humans. It hides in rocky crevices during the day and hunts at night, attacking only if threatened or provoked near its den.
🔬 A Signal for Biologists and a Symbol of the Sea
Marine experts see the sighting as a sign of ecological change — the Mediterranean is warming, and more tropical species are adapting to Cypriot waters. For locals, however, encountering this rare creature is more than a scientific event — it’s a living reminder of Cyprus’s timeless bond with the sea and its ancient mysteries.

🧠💔 When a Husband Chooses AI Over His Wife: A New Form of Infidelity Sweeping Across Cyprus
In Cyprus, a growing number of people are talking about an unsettling trend — emotional dependence on chatbots. More and more individuals are turning to artificial intelligence to vent, seek support, and feel the “understanding” they’re missing in real relationships.

From a psychological point of view, this isn’t just a digital habit — it’s a new form of emotional infidelity. People are giving their feelings to a machine that perfectly mirrors their emotions, never argues, and never judges. This “ideal listener” becomes a dangerous refuge for those who feel lonely even within their marriage.

Cypriot psychologists report an increase in such cases, especially among men who feel pressure and emotional disconnection. But a chatbot cannot love, remember, or empathize — it only mimics attention. True intimacy requires vulnerability, honesty, and dialogue.

🩶 Love is not an algorithm. And when a foreign “voice” begins to echo from the screen, it’s not technology’s fault — it’s a signal that silence has entered the relationship.

🦠 Coxsackie Virus Outbreak in Cyprus: Pediatricians Warn Parents
Cyprus is seeing a rise in Coxsackie virus cases — the “hand-foot-mouth” disease that mainly affects children under six. The infection spreads rapidly in nurseries and schools, especially during autumn and spring.

Typical symptoms include rashes on the hands, feet, and inside the mouth, along with fever and fatigue. Pediatrician Panayiotis Yiangou advises parents to keep children at home until all symptoms disappear and to monitor hydration, as mouth sores can make eating and drinking difficult.

Doctors urge parents to report every infection case to schools and follow simple hygiene rules: regular handwashing, personal towels, and separate dishes. Adults rarely contract the virus, and children usually recover quickly with proper care.

Revelations in Demosthenous Killing: Yellow‑Shirted Suspect and Double‑Cab Pickup
Three suspects (58, 39, 30) appeared at Limassol court under tight security in bulletproof vests. A 44‑year‑old ex‑footballer remains detained; he cooperated and named two buyers of a motorcycle found near Agios Tychonas. CCTV links a double‑cab pickup (rack, exhaust) to the murder and the van arson. Footage shows a 39‑year‑old Greek in a yellow shirt the day and days before, allegedly driving the pickup and collecting the assailants. Phones, helmets, a yellow shirt and the pickup seized. Two deny involvement; further statements pending. Police say the killers staked out the 49‑year‑old businessman’s mansion and acted with premeditation.

📱Cyprus considers blocking social media for under-16s
Proposal by DISY MP Dimitris Dimitriou seeks to raise the age limit from 14 to 16. Platforms like Instagram, TikTok and X would face age checks, ideally via digital ID, and rules would also touch gambling and tobacco access. Supporters frame it as enhanced protection, opponents cite vague exceptions for education and "delicate" uses. Experts warn of technical, privacy and GDPR hurdles, enforcement questions and easy circumvention by false data or VPNs. Parliament debate will decide details and safeguards.

🚗Opel/Vauxhall recall of 2,123 vehicles over Takata driver's airbag
Road Transport Department corrects initial report: the Takata defect concerns the driver's airbag, not the front passenger unit. The revision follows updated information from the manufacturer's distributor. In a follow-up notice to the October 17 announcement, the manufacturer directs that affected vehicles be taken out of service and immobilized immediately. Consequently the Department has revoked the certificates of fitness for these vehicles. Owners must contact the manufacturer's Cyprus distributor, CIC Automasters, promptly for instructions and to arrange repairs.

⛪️Ballot or Blank Slip? Risk in Election for New Metropolitan of Paphos
Holy Synod decision on former Metropolitan Tychikos is clear; Archbishop asks him to sign a libel of Faith renouncing the seceders. After signing, Archbishop will decide how Tychikos will continue episcopal duties, in which district and under what title. Theologian Giannis Antoniadis says Tychikos will likely accept. Electoral process for a new Metropolitan remains: Synod announces start, 40 days for candidates — unmarried clergy, over 35, degree, 10 years' priesthood. Synod will choose voting method, named ballots or blank slips; three majority names go back to Synod to appoint the shepherd. If dissenting faithful write Tychikos on a blank slip, he cannot reclaim the see or be a candidate.

Woman incenses Erhürman — debate on Islamization of occupied areas
Theologian Theodoros Kyriakou commented on Tufan Erhürman's election and a victory video where a woman waves a censer over him. Kyriakou said many Turkish Cypriots, notably teachers, resist attempts to Islamize the occupied areas and are aware of the consequences. He sees Erhürman leaning more secular and called Islamization a pressure from Ankara; if he resists it, he could help non‑fundamentalist Turkish Cypriots. On the censer, Kyriakou said such rituals are cultural and shared across traditions; minorities often adopt majority folk customs.

🪖Cyprus National Guard Faces Staffing Crisis: Women Avoid Service, Youth Losing Interest
During a parliamentary debate on the Defence Ministry’s budget, it became clear that the Cyprus National Guard is struggling with a serious manpower shortage. Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas admitted that the voluntary enlistment program for women has failed, and that young people are losing interest in military service.

The main issues include low motivation among SYOP contract soldiers, an outdated promotion system, and a lack of career prospects after service. Despite salary increases and new allowances, recruitment remains weak.

Palmas stated that a reform of the rank and promotion structure is being prepared, along with plans to create a security corps for ports and airports to employ former soldiers.

Parliament urged the Defence Ministry to modernize the system urgently to prevent the loss of experienced personnel and avoid a full-scale staffing crisis.
