Charita Mandoles, emblem of the struggle for the missing
Deputy Minister of Culture Vasiliki Kassianidou called Charita Mandoles an emblematic figure in the Cypriot struggle for missing persons. The English translation of Evridiki

Perikleous‑Papadopoulou’s novel was presented at the University of Cyprus; it brings the island’s modern tragic history and families’ fight for truth and justice to international readers. The book blends testimony and literary narrative and, with the author’s recent volume on Eleni Foka, forms a literary diptych of memory and resistance.

The Ministry funded the translation to promote Cypriot literature abroad and sustain awareness of the island’s unresolved division and the enduring pain of the missing.

🪧British activists confront illegal limesticks, free trapped blackcaps
British team led by journalist-activist Chris Packham tours Cyprus documenting illegal limesticks and nets used to trap migratory blackcaps. In one action they freed birds; in another they staged a protest outside Zygi police station. Birds can remain entangled for hours, exhaust and often are killed by trappers.

Encounters with poachers and landowners have turned confrontational. Trapping and trade banned by national and EU law since 1974, yet illegal market endures — up to €90 per dozen, estimated €15m yearly. Cyprus is a major migratory corridor; millions pass each season.

💻Cyprus seeks improved schooling for children sidelined by illness
Parliament committee presses Education Ministry to expand education for pupils absent long-term due to illness. Nearly 300 secondary students now taught off-site; 70% at home with psychological issues, 30% in hospital or abroad. MPs say health comes first but schooling must continue.

They call for a pool of trained home and hospital teachers and wider use of online classes. Challenges: vocational subjects harder to deliver, little data on primary pupils. MPs demand less bureaucracy, faster lessons and family counselling. Ministry to present updated plan on Oct 8.

🗣️Headscarf dispute sparks tension in occupied north
Scenes of tension yesterday outside the Supreme Constitutional Court in the occupied north, hours before the court was due to rule on the so‑called "Headscarf Regulation". During a rally opponents chanted "Cyprus is and will remain secular" to oppose any easing of rules on Islamic headscarves; a member of the crowd replied "Allahu Akbar" and police intervened immediately.

The episode exposed sharp divisions between defenders of a secular public order and advocates of greater religious freedom. The court's forthcoming decision is expected to influence the debate over the balance between religion and the secular character of the regime.

📝Savvidis drops prosecution of Odysseas; lawyer: no crime
Achilleas Aimilianidis: We told investigators there was no criminal offence.
General Attorney Georgios Savvidis will not press charges over Odysseas Michailides' public statements on his dismissal.
Aimilianidis: The Council that removed him is not a court; remarks did not amount to contempt under case law and the European Court of Human Rights.

Savvidis cited May 20 comments and later retractions, said prosecution could inflame public debate, offered a "second chance" with a warning against repeating unfounded, insulting claims.
Michailides says he will not be silenced, accuses the Attorney General of hostility since 2020 and vows to keep defending justice regardless of personal cost.

Concerns over no open tender and a requirement that providers have offices in Cyprus, limiting competition.
Government: legal framework set 2020–21, providers had years to prepare. Committee requested related documents and urged greater transparency and public information on el. IDs.
