🤷♀️Decorative air conditioners: installed but working in only one in six Nicosia schools
High‑school students held a two‑hour lesson boycott protesting classroom air conditioners that in many schools are installed but not operable. School Boards President Nikos Megalemos says older buildings need new electrical works; kindergartens easier — almost all of 272 in Nicosia have units.
In primary/secondary schools installation rate 25%, functioning rate 16%. Phase I: 15 schools (12 OK, 3 serious issues); Phase II: 22 schools. Pupils at Apostolos Barnabas Lyceum warn of street protests if the ministry does not respond and reject claims of outside motives. Education Ministry director Giorgos Pantelis calls the protest untimely and says the ministry is implementing a programme.

🚰Dams Neglected: Why Maintenance Lagged and How It Will Be Fixed
Parliamentary committee heard Department of Water Development admit maintenance is inadequate due to chronic understaffing. Dam Safety head Stella Patsali called the understaffing "almost comical." Committee chair Zacharias Koulias warned of risks to human life and said many dams have exceeded safe limits. The Department has launched a short‑term programme of works and studies starting early 2025, aiming to complete priority actions by end 2027. Dam Safety Service, created in 2022, is coordinating with the ministry; staffing increases and measures to move to regular preventive maintenance by 2027 are planned.

On Monday evening at 23:19, the fire service received a call about a blaze in an apartment on the second floor of a residential building in the Germasogeia area of Limassol. Firefighters from Agios Nikolaos arrived with three engines and a hydraulic lift. The flames were brought under control by 00:22.
Due to the intensity of the fire and high temperatures, the apartment was completely destroyed, with damage also affecting neighboring units and common areas. The entire building was evacuated. At the time of the incident, two people were inside: one man jumped out of a window and was taken to hospital, while the other escaped through the emergency exit.
Preliminary investigations suggest the fire was caused by a gas leak while attempting to use the stove.

📝Cyprus orders removal of anti‑Gaza graffiti, labels it hate speech
Interior Ministry circular of 11 Sept 2025, issued after a request from Israel’s Minister of Diaspora, told municipalities to erase anti‑Gaza slogans. Critics say equating protest with hate speech effectively backs Israel’s military actions.
AKEL leader Stefanos Stefanou: condemning atrocities in Gaza is not hate speech; silencing solidarity hurts everyone. Union of Municipalities chief Andreas Vyras: municipalities do not take orders from foreign governments; they already act against true incitement.
DISY and AKEL traded accusations; Interior Minister Konstantinos Ioannou called the circular a routine legal reminder. Many Cypriots fear legitimate protest may be muted.

🔊 Fire in Paphos: School bus caught fire on Archiepiskopou Makariou Street in Chloraka — children miraculously unharmed
This morning, around 7:00 a.m., a bus operated by OSYPA on a school route burst into flames on Archiepiskopou Makariou Street in Chloraka. Luckily, the children had not yet boarded, so no injuries were reported.
The driver, noticing smoke from the engine compartment, managed to stop the vehicle, move it off the road and call for assistance. His attempt to extinguish the fire himself failed, but firefighters later brought the blaze under control. The bus, however, was heavily damaged.
Students were safely transported to school by a replacement vehicle. Investigators are now examining the cause of the incident, especially since this bus was among the newest in the fleet.

📝No repeat of past mistakes — Road Safety Unit to reopen, says Vafeadis
Transport Minister Alex Vafeadis announced reconstitution and reopening of the Road Safety Unit. It will serve advisory, coordinating and information roles among state agencies on road safety.
Vafeadis said the Unit was allowed to lapse in 2021, depriving the Ministry of a key tool for market oversight, policy design and public confidence. Duties include keeping notification chains between parties on used vehicles imported from third countries, a major problem during Takata airbag recalls. Government vows legislative reforms to strengthen road safety.

🩺Father alleges pediatrician missed child’s cancer
Father sent complaint to HIO saying pediatrician failed to detect cancer in his daughter. He claims delayed recognition of symptoms, due to doctor's heavy caseload, let lymphoma progress to stage four.
He found child was never registered on that pediatrician’s list despite follow‑up since birth and says the doctor enrolled both children with other pediatricians without parents’ knowledge. HIO legal officer Christiana Michail says family doctors are GESY’s backbone, may register up to 2,500 patients. Initial review opened. HIO can impose fines, issue recommendations or remove providers and is probing replacement procedures. Parents urged to verify registration via GESY system or call centre.

📝Supreme Court: No duty to regularise missing persons' public‑service status
Supreme Constitutional Court rejected appeal on Sept. 15, finding no statutory obligation under the 1985 Emergency Public Servants (Appointments) Law to grant permanent appointment to a person declared missing after the Turkish invasion.
Applicant sought inclusion of his missing brother among permanent emergency public servants because the Cabinet had ordered salary payments. Court ruled Cabinet decisions cannot override law; they merely continued pay and provided pension and one‑off relief. Appeal dismissed with costs.

Higgins: EU Silence Over Gaza Genocide
Irish President Michael Higgins says several EU states looked the other way while emaciated children in Gaza suffered, and a UN-commissioned report describes acts amounting to genocide by the Netanyahu government.
Germany, Czechia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Austria, Italy and Cyprus blocked symbolic EU measures and delayed an Article 2 assessment of the EU-Israel Association Agreement. On May 20 Cyprus rejected the EU assessment, prioritizing national interests over international law. UN reports document hunger used as a weapon and mass killings; EU officials say member-state blocks aggravated the humanitarian crisis.

40 UN States Back Estonia — Cyprus and Greece Included
Estonian FM, on behalf of 40 countries and the EU including Greece and Cyprus, denounced a breach of Estonian airspace on 19 September 2025 by three armed Russian MiG‑31s. The jets spent 12 minutes in NATO airspace, penetrated about 100 km into Estonia and came close to Tallinn. It was the fourth violation this year. Signatories said the incident fits a wider pattern of Russian provocations against neighbours, cited recent breaches of Poland and Romania and the war in Ukraine, called it a dangerous escalation and breach of international law, welcomed South Korea’s swift UNSC response and urged Russia to end the war, stop provocations and respect sovereignty and territorial integrity.

🌳Union: No fragmentation of forest protection, oppose transfer to Interior
Union rep Antonis Sarris objects to moving part of the Forestry Department to the Interior Ministry. He says most staff work on forest fire protection; any transfer will leave the Department unable to protect forests.
Forestry management must remain integrated and holistic, backed by EU and World Bank reviews and strong results versus other Mediterranean countries. He rejects dismantling the service as a fix, urges listening to scientists, calls for filling entry‑level posts and warns Greece's shift of firefighting away from forestry led to worse fires.

🪧Breakaway regime accuses Nicosia of handing sovereignty to Israel
Ziya Ozturkler, speaker in the breakaway north, says Nicosia is giving away the keys to its sovereignty after granting Israel privileged access to Larnaca and Paphos airports and to the Paphos military base. He calls the move extremely dangerous, cites the Israeli PM's aggressive stance and warns it raises issues within the EU.
The criticism reflects concern over deeper Cyprus–Israel defence ties, including exercises and intelligence sharing, and the US lifting some arms-sale limits. Ankara and northern authorities say the steps upset the island's balance and warn of serious consequences if Nicosia pursues further rearmament.
