🐴 Birth of Aronass the Donkey in Athalassa: Preserving a Rare Species and Honoring Cyprus’ Centuries-Old Heritage
The Environmental Information and Education Centre in Athalassa has welcomed the birth of a third Cypriot donkey — a rare species officially protected since 2008. The Director of the Forestry Department, Dr. Savvas Ezekiel, proposed the name Aronass, meaning “imposing” and also linked to an ancient toponym of the area.

The newborn is the offspring of the she-donkey Elia, whose name dates back to Homeric times and symbolizes “life from the sun.” She had previously given birth to Apollo, and now her lineage contributes once more to the survival of the traditional breed.

Historically, Cypriot donkeys were the backbone of rural life. Nearly every household owned at least one animal to carry water, food, or building materials. They were vital in vineyards, fields, and even mines, serving as an irreplaceable partner in agriculture and forestry. Donkeys accompanied Cypriots through joy and hardship alike — from weddings to wartime struggles.

In folklore, the donkey represents endurance, patience, and resilience. These animals are believed to have helped Cypriots survive droughts, wars, and economic hardships, while also supporting trade and farming.

Today, with their numbers in decline, preserving them in Athalassa is not only an environmental effort but also a cultural mission — a living reminder of Cyprus’ traditions and roots.

📍 The Athalassa Centre is open to visitors 24/7, giving everyone the chance to meet this emblem of Cypriot heritage.

💚What’s Happening at Nissi Beach? Crystal Blue Turns Green!
This September has surprised visitors to one of Ayia Napa’s most famous beaches. Instead of the usual turquoise and bright blue, the sea at Nissi Beach has shifted into multiple shades of green. Tourists are flooding social media with photos and videos under #nissibeach #greenwater #cyprus, debating the unusual phenomenon.

The reasons remain unclear — some blame seasonal algae, others point to currents or weather changes. But the fact is undeniable: the island’s iconic seascape has taken on an unexpected “tropical” look.
