🅿️New list of dangerous vehicles
Department of Road Transport informs consumers that in week 37 of 2025 the EU Safety Gate published notifications on certain dangerous non‑food vehicles and vehicle parts. Manufacturers, representatives, distributors, importers and sellers who have placed such items on the Cypriot market must notify the Department and take necessary measures, including recalls under applicable law.

Consumers owning affected cars or motorcycles should contact the manufacturer/rep/distributor for instructions. Owners of affected parts should stop using them and, if possible, return them to the seller. If operators refuse to act, submit a written complaint to the Consumer Protection Service.

🚨Sept 24 hearing for five Greek Cypriots in occupied Nicosia
Proceedings resume 24 Sept, 10:30. Five Greek Cypriots detained since 19 July face charges of entering a military area; one also of illegal entry, four of concealment. Today all five testified. Four waived oath and were not questioned; the fifth, alleged driver, was sworn and answered questions. All say they handed IDs at the Turkish Cypriot checkpoint and got them back, and did not pass the sign marking a military area. Prosecutor suggested they sought evidence for lawsuits in the Republic; defendants denied. No more prosecution witnesses; defence will bring two. Tomorrow they appear at Trikomo district court on trespass and public order counts; two face additional personal data charges.

🪧Equality union: Freedom to contract not absolute
Pan‑Cyprian union Equality contests legal opinion by Achilleas Emilianidis that mandatory ATA for private sector workers would be unconstitutional under Article 26 protecting freedom to contract.

The union says labour contracting freedom cannot be absolute because employment relationships involve an inherent power imbalance. Accepting that logic would erase the state's constitutional ability to legislate protective labour rules.

Points to existing legal interventions—minimum wage, dismissal rules, working time, annual leave, maternity protection, health and safety—as necessary safeguards for workers' dignity and welfare.

❗️Rise in Postal Scams — How Scammers Trick Citizens
Mass SMS and email messages tell recipients they allegedly have a parcel at Cyprus Post and instruct them to "confirm" delivery. Messages include an electronic link that asks users to enter credit or debit card details to pay a small "release" fee. The Police warns these communications are fraudulent and aim to extract money and steal card information. Citizens should not reply, must not click any links, should delete such messages and report incidents to the Police or the postal operator via known official channels; risk of unauthorized charges and data interception.

👨‍⚖️Somali asylum claim rejected after claimant became adult
Administrative Court of Appeal upholds first‑instance court's rejection of an unaccompanied Somali's request for international protection; applicant had become adult by time of judicial review.
First court had annulled the administration's decision due to a non child‑centred asylum interview but, after considering updated country information, dismissed the appeal finding no risk of persecution.
Appeal court held courts may decide on updated facts and need not repeat interviews or hold new oral hearings when written submissions exist and no prima facie fear is shown.
Credibility requires an initial plausible claim of fear of persecution with explanations; applicant must prove assertions.
Case handled by State Counsel Penelope Charalambous.
