๐Ÿ”ฅ Flames in the Mediterranean: NASA satellites detect forest fires
๐ŸŒ NASA satellites show that forest fires are raging across the Mediterranean. Forests are burning in Spain, France, Greece, and Cyprus.

What is visible on the map?
โ€ข ๐Ÿ”ด Red dots: active fires in the last 24 hours.
โ€ข โญ• Orange/pink marks: places where fire has burned over the past week.

๐Ÿš’ Causes of fires:
Extreme heat, high temperatures, and wind created ideal conditions for fire spread.

๐Ÿ”Ž How does NASA help?
Satellite data helps rescuers:
โ€ข Quickly locate new fire outbreaks.
โ€ข Track fire directions.
โ€ข Understand the overall situation in the region.

Why is this important?
Massive fires threaten ecosystems, homes, and people, and can also affect the climate on a global scale. The situation remains tense, and satellites continue to monitor developments.

๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ Cyprus Customs seized 12 kg of drugs in parcels in one month
In July, customs officers and drug control in Cyprus stopped three attempts to smuggle drugs by mail:

1. July 7: In a parcel from the USA (declared as "robe"), 5.9 kg of cannabis was found.

2. July 14: In two shipments ("leather jacket" and "bag") at Larnaca airport โ€” 5.6 kg of cannabis.

3. July 23: In "baseball caps" at the post office โ€” 0.6 kg of cannabis. Two days later, a 32-year-old resident of Limassol came for the parcel and was arrested.

A total of more than 12 kg was seized. The substances were detected through risk analysis, X-ray, and inspection. Authorities have increased control over postal shipments.

๐Ÿ”Š PAPHOS: Dead sea turtle found on Paphos beach
On Friday afternoon, a dead old sea turtle was found on a rocky beach within the municipality of Paphos.

The Fisheries and Marine Research Service was immediately notified to take the necessary actions.

Unfortunately, this is not the first case of such an incident, as turtles often suffer fatal injuries from passing speedboats or other human factors.

The presence of children in this area highlights the need to protect marine life and raise environmental awareness.

๐Ÿฑ Cats and summer in Cyprus: what are the biggest health risks?
๐ŸŒž Summer poses a particular danger to cats, mainly due to high temperatures and an increase in the number of insects.

๐Ÿฑ Although cats are generally adapted to warm climates, they require special attention and care to avoid health problems.

๐ŸŒก๏ธ Heatstroke โ€” although rare, can occur if a cat is in a place without shade or access to water, such as in a car or enclosed space.

๐Ÿ˜ฐ Symptoms of heatstroke include fatigue, shortness of breath, and open-mouth breathing.

๐Ÿš‘ In such cases, the cat should be immediately moved to a cool place and offered water. In severe cases, veterinary assistance is necessary.

๐Ÿœ Summer also increases the number of parasites such as fleas and ticks, which multiply in ideal temperature and humidity conditions.

๐Ÿพ Fleas are attracted to the cat's fur to complete their life cycle, and their presence often indicates a source of infestation in the environment (e.g., wood, manure, soil, open spaces).

๐Ÿงด Regular deworming every 2โ€“3 months is necessary, as well as eliminating infestation sources near the home.

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•๏ธ There are currently many products available: ampoules, tablets, and collars, mainly suitable for outdoor cats.

๐Ÿ Another summer danger is bee stings, especially if the cat tries to catch them. ๐Ÿพ If the sting is on the body, it usually does not cause serious problems. However, if an allergic reaction occurs (e.g., swelling of the face or difficulty breathing), the cat should be immediately taken to a veterinarian.

๐Ÿ’– By following preventive measures and paying attention to the environment, we can ensure our beloved cats have a safe and carefree summer.

๐ŸŒ Earth Tremors: How 2025 Changed the Seismic Landscape of Cyprus?
๐Ÿ“Š Just the numbers: From January to July 2025, seismologists recorded over 500 underground tremors (exactly 515) somehow related to Cyprus. ๐Ÿ˜ฑ Sounds alarming? Let's take a deeper look.

๐Ÿ”Ž Not all tremors are "local": Itโ€™s important to understand โ€“ the instruments detect activity within a radius of hundreds of kilometers!

๐ŸŒŠ Many of these 515 events occurred off the coasts of Crete, Rhodes, or in the Aegean Sea.

๐Ÿ”Ž Strength lies in depth and rarity:
๐Ÿ“‰ Only 39 tremors reached a magnitude of 3.0+ (the threshold of light perceptibility).

โšก The strongest (M6.1) happened on May 14 (east of Crete, 01:51) and May 22 (northeast of Heraklion, 06:19). Both were at a depth of about 60 km.

๐ŸŒŠ On June 3 (02:17) โ€“ a M5.8 tremor between Rhodes and the Turkish town of ร‡iftlik.

๐Ÿ“ The closest significant event to Cyprus was on June 23 (M4.3), with the epicenter 57 km south of Paralimni.

๐ŸŒŠ The "shallowest" (depth only 2.61 km!, M3.1) was on June 22 in the sea, 134 km from Polis. Lucky โ€“ if it had been under the city, the consequences would have been more serious.

โ“ Why is Cyprus "trembling"? The island is at the forefront of tectonic confrontation! ๐ŸŒ Here, the African plate is slowly but steadily subducting beneath the Eurasian plate. This giant "subduction zone" is the main cause of seismicity throughout the Eastern Mediterranean.
๐Ÿ”ฅ Activity here is not new.

๐Ÿ“œ Historical context โ€“ lessons from the past:
๐Ÿ›๏ธ 15 BC: A powerful earthquake destroyed the ancient city-state of Salamis โ€“ a large-scale reconstruction was required under Emperor Augustus.

๐ŸŒŠ 1222: A catastrophic earthquake (estimated M7+) devastated the eastern coast, caused a tsunami, and seriously altered the coastline (especially around Famagusta). It was described by Arab chroniclers.

๐Ÿซฃ 1953: The strongest in the 20th century (M6.5) on the west of the island. 40 people died, villages near Paphos were destroyed.

๐Ÿ” Main conclusion for 2025: The vast majority of the 500+ recorded tremors were microscopic and deep.

๐Ÿ“ˆ They were "caught" only by ultra-sensitive instruments. The population did not feel them. Statistics are primarily scientific data, not a cause for alarm.

โ—๏ธ Living on a fault means understanding risks, but not living in fear.

๐Ÿ—๏ธ Modern technology and building codes are the best protection. We remember history, follow science, but do not let the numbers scare us!

๐Ÿ“ˆ Cyprus will face rising fuel prices due to the new EU emissions trading system: consequences for consumers and support measures for vulnerable groups
๐Ÿ“ˆ Cyprus will face an increase in fuel prices due to the new European Pollution Trading 2 system, which from 2026 requires importers to pay for emissions, and from 2027 these costs will be passed on to consumers.

Gasoline and diesel prices are expected to rise by 12 cents per liter.

The European Union will allocate 174 million euros to Cyprus to support vulnerable groups, but the country will have to co-finance part of the expenses.

In the absence of modernization of buildings and public transport, Cyprus will find itself in a difficult situation.
