🔊 Tension at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia: Pro-Palestinian rally ends in clash with police
On Thursday evening, a solidarity rally for Palestine was held outside the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, organized by the movements Global Movement for Gaza in Cyprus, United for Palestine, Far Right Watch Cyprus, and Genocide-Free Cyprus.

Protesters called on Cyprus to “implement the ruling of the International Court of Justice” and publicly condemn Israel’s actions after the seizure of the international flotilla Sumud, which carried over 500 activists from around the world. Demonstrators also demanded the release of the detained crew and compliance with international law regarding Gaza.

According to eyewitnesses, tensions rose when members of the special police unit MAAD attempted to disperse protesters after some blocked traffic on an adjacent street. The standoff eased within minutes, with no injuries or arrests reported.

Chants of “Freedom for Palestine,” “Stop the genocide,” and “From Cyprus to Palestine — occupation is a crime” echoed through the crowd. The event once again highlighted Cypriot society’s close attention to the Middle East crisis and its expression of solidarity with the Palestinian people.
