👮 Armed Extortion in Central Larnaca: “Protection” Racket Ends in Gunfire Near Police Headquarters
Police in Larnaca are investigating a violent incident linked to an organized extortion scheme disguised as business “security.” According to investigators, a group pressured local entrepreneurs to pay a one-off fee of about €7,000, followed by monthly payments of €1,000 for so-called protection. Those who refused were threatened and subjected to intimidation.

The case escalated dramatically on Grigoris Afxentiou Avenue, just steps from the police headquarters, where a mass brawl broke out involving axes, metal objects, and firearms. Spent shell casings and blood traces were found at the scene. Authorities believe the same network also targeted nightclubs, charging per security guard and funneling part of the proceeds to the organizers.

Investigators say the affair began roughly two weeks earlier with anonymous calls to a local car-rental business owner. The caller, speaking broken Greek, demanded money for “protection,” lowered the demand after refusals, and issued explicit threats. The pressure continued with repeat calls and an in-person visit by two men—one on crutches—who again demanded payment. After renewed threats, the organizer returned in person; minutes later, multiple vehicles arrived and around 20 individuals confronted the victim. A final refusal triggered the violent clash and gunfire.

A 48-year-old Cypriot national has been arrested. Three foreign nationals have been declared wanted, and several others are detained on related charges. The investigation is ongoing. Residents say they are deeply alarmed that such brazen criminal activity unfolded in what was once considered a quiet city.
