Scandal in Famagusta: 13th-Century Church Turned Into a Bar — Sacred Knights’ Temple Becomes a Party Spot!A video from
Famagusta has gone viral on social media, showing that the
Church of Saint John the Baptist, built in the
late 13th century by the Knights Hospitaller, has been converted into a
bar with music and alcohol.
The church, erected during the
Frankish Kingdom of Cyprus when Famagusta was the island’s main port, once served as a spiritual hub for knights and pilgrims. After the Ottoman conquest, it lost its religious role but remained a major architectural landmark.
Now, more than seven centuries later, this ancient sanctuary has become a leisure venue. Both
Greek and Turkish Cypriots have condemned the move, calling it
blasphemous and disrespectful to history. Authorities have yet to comment on the scandal.
