All "purebred" cats have health problems, especially the new and popular breeds. They are bred for being an entertainment for their owners, not for being healthy.

Moreover, when a breed becomes popular, breeders want to make more money on it. Guess what they do? They breed animals with serious health problems. You won't know about the genetics until you buy the kitten.

I'd say, it's even worse with dogs. But I'm not a veterinarian, so it's just a subjective feeling.

I had a Golden Retriever long ago. Learnt a bit about breed standards and such. Turns out, they were much healthier on average when it was just a dog for duck hunting. But then the breed became popular. Oooh, sweet doggie! Now too many retrievers have arthritis, allergies, and other issues. Responsible breeders watch for it. Greedy breeders don't.
