The population of fish in the Mediterranean Sea surrounding Cyprus has dwindled due to a number of issues like the migration of invasive fish species, lack of nutrients in the sea and global warming. But above all else, the number of fish found off the shores has decreased due to overfishing by the people who rely on the catches the most. The “fishman” as Mouchlis calls them. What fish are still caught in large quantities by Cypriot fisherman, traditionally species like the bluefin tuna don’t play a large role in the Cypriot diet — meaning roughly 90 percent of the Cypriot fish supply is now imported from Egypt and Greece.
